Prenatal Classes by Dr. Debmita Dutta

Contact Us

What are prenatal classes?

Let us begin with the meaning of prenatal
Pre means before
Natal means childbirth.
So prenatal classes essentially are classes that expecting parents take before their baby is born.
The classes provide them with –
  1. Guidelines for a healthy pregnancy
  2. Strategies to ensure a good birthing experience.
  3. Techniques for successful breastfeeding
  4. Information on newborn care.
Prenatal classes are also called antenatal classes, childbirth classes and Lamaze classes.
Dr Debmita Dutta prefers the term prenatal classes or antenatal classes more than the other terms used – because her classes are much more than just about breathing techniques (also called Lamaze) during childbirth.

What is taught in prenatal classes by Dr Debmita Dutta?

What do prenatal classes teach is a question many parents who are just learning about the existence of prenatal classes ask.
  1. What to eat during pregnancy – nutrition in pregnancy
  2. Exercise in pregnancy
  3. All about birthing – both natural birthing and caesarean section
  4. All about breastfeeding
  5. All about newborn care.
Dr Debmita Dutta offers a set of 3 classes to all expecting parents in which she covers birthing, breastfeeding and newborn care.
She adds on sessions on nutrition and exercise only if the expecting parents request them. She first asks them to view her exercise in pregnancy video playlist on her YouTube channel and read her articles on healthy eating during pregnancy and postpartum on the Morisons Baby Dreams website.

What happens in prenatal classes by Dr Debmita Dutta?

Right now – because of the COVID -19 pandemic – all prenatal classes by Dr Debmita Dutta are online only.
Her classes are one-hour sessions.
And all of them are one-on-one. There are no group classes.
She always requests both expecting mother and father to attend the classes together because she believes that the baby needs both the parents through pregnancy, birthing, immediately after birth and breastfeeding
Once the sessions are booked – the Google meeting link is shared with the expecting parents and they can join the meeting from one or two devices as they like. In some cases the expecting parents may be at different locations – but they can both attend the one hour sessions even of they are away at work.

What happens in a birthing class?

In the birthing class Dr Debmita Dutta explains the magical process of birthing very simply without using any mindboggling medical terminology.
She has many expecting moms come to her and express their anxiety about not knowing how to push out their baby during labour.
And so she focuses on helping them understand that their bodies are strong enough to push out their babies. And that the process of labour is almost automatic. Once the baby is ready to come out into the world – nobody can stop it.
However, the experience becomes much more pleasant if they can learn how to participate in the process and facilitate it instead of resisting it.
All expecting couples are afraid of pain. And have lots of questions about eliminating pain.
Dr Debmita Dutta does not believe in eliminating pain – but she teaches how to manage pain through breathing and massage techniques.
The breathing techniques used to manage pain during labour that she teaches are called Lamaze.

What happens in a breastfeeding class?

Will every new mom have breastmilk? The answer is YES.
Will that mean that breastfeeding will be easy? The answer is NO.
It is most important to prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy.
It is most important to begin breastfeeding the right way immediately after birth.
It is especially important to understand where milk comes from and how to increase milk supply when your baby cries for more.
The right way to hold your baby, the right way to latch, the right way to feed – are all explained and demonstrated in this class.
Dr Debmita Dutta explains all this and more in her breastfeeding class and prepares you to be mindful and relaxed through your breastfeeding journey.

What happens in a newborn care class?

The newborn care class focuses on everything you will need to do for your newborn in the initial months.
The technical aspects of newborn care – like how to hold the baby, how to take care of the umbilical stump, how to change diapers and how to bathe the baby are definitely an integral part of the class.
The class also covers how to bond with your baby and how to build your baby’s brain in these very crucial months when the brain is growing rapidly.

The class is a short introduction to parenting and teaches you the essential elements to keep in mind so that problems do not arise later.
