On the BBC yesterday chatting with James Reynolds on the Outside Source — dissecting Gentle Parenting and FAFO (Fool Around and Find Out) Parenting.
The debate is loud. But the neuroscience is quiet — and clear. Children learn from CAUSE and EFFECT But EFFECTS trigger EMOTION And emotion determines whether learning actually happens. Gentle parenting focuses only on EMOTIONS, The child feels understood -- but may not build a strong cause–effect map. FAFO allows the EFFECT without emotional support, the child experiences the consequence -- but stress floods the nervous system and clouds thinking. Both can slow down brain development because brain development requires LEARNING And learning requires three things: 1. Reality - the experience of cause and effect 2. Regulation - emotional support through the effect 3. Reflection - extracting the lesson for next time. We do not need to rescue. We must not abandon We need to - Build the brain and shift to Neuro-Construction Parenting Build the Brain. Change Behaviour. Create the Future. The future belongs to cognitively agile children. And cognitively agile children are raised by adults who practice: Courage — to allow discomfort. Consistency — so the brain detects patterns. Compassion — to keep the nervous system regulated. Clarity — so expectations are not confusing. Communication — that empowers with learning Instead of debating Gentle Parenting Vs Harsh Parenting (FAFO) – let us embrace the idea of Develop to Discipline. Discipline emerges when the brain develops. And that can liberate us from getting lost in the maze of parenting styles. #gentleparenting #fafoparenting #parentingstyles |
